Data assimilation for limited-area models in central Europe
The seminar will present current capabilities, challenges and developments of data assimilation in Slovenia and, more broadly, within the Regional Cooperation for Limited Area modeling in Central Europe (RC LACE). In all seven participating national meteorological services, Aire Limitee Adaption Dynamique INternational (ALADIN) numerical weather prediction model is run operationally at spatial resolution from 1 do 8 km. Countries use a common observation data hub and typically apply three-dimensional variational assimilation. The use of satellite radiances will be discussed, with some remarks related to the limited-area modeling (thinning, bias correction). Developments related to other in-situ and remote sensing observations like high-resolution aircraft and surface observations, radar and Global Navigation Satellite System-based ground observations will also be presented. These assimilation systems are expected to benefit from future Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite observations of European Organization for Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), especially the hyperspectral sounder.
